I am not sure if this is a happy or sad celebration but my humor books: “Adventures In Deaf Culture” and “Extreme Interpreting” are SOLD OUT! So a big thank you to all the people who bought the books over the past two years. It means a lot to me! It is a great feeling to have your work in print. I am very proud of this books because I think they are funny and are a great snapshot of our culture told through cartoons. Someday someone will bring it into the Antique Road Show and get it appraised from $15 to $450,000!

Lately, Kay and I had been overwhelmed with emails from fans who love “That Deaf Guy” webcomic!! I am always happy to hear from people. It makes us feel what we do is important to people because it is very important to us. So this year, Kay and I will be working on book #3 which will include most of “That Deaf Guy” webcomic strips.

Thanks again for all your support over the years.
‘Til next time—Matt (and Kay)

Sorry about not blogging in awhile. I have to admit as much as I was resistant to the idea of Facebook I like it so much better. I get to have conversations with people who are enjoying “That Deaf Guy”. So come and visit us and share in the conversations at www.facebook.com/thatdeafguycomic

Two weeks ago, my wife and I went to Las Vegas for a cartooning seminar. Since we attended a similar seminar two years ago we ran into old and new friends such as Chad Carpenter – “Tundra” , Brian Crane – “Pickles” and Michael Jantze – “Norm”!! But the highlight for us, was meeting one of our most favorite cartoonists, Danielle Corsetto – “Girls with Slingshots” (GSW) Her webcomic is at www.gwscomic.com Her presentation was worth every penny paid for the conference. When it comes to Webcomics she is a powerhouse and we were able to learn a lot about her model so we can apply it to “That Deaf Guy”.

On Monday, Danielle mentioned “That Deaf Guy” webcomic in her blog. Danielle has a HUGE readership and to be mentioned by her is like making it to the cover of People Magazine. So many people hit our website that it actually crashed from all the traffic. What a great problem to have! We had over 37,000 hits. Our celebrating was short lived as we scrambled to get our website working again. We were so grateful to all the people who contacted us to tell us our website was not working. Luckily, they were able to view a few cartoons before the got an error 500 message. We spent the better part of today replying to emails thanking all of those amazing GWS fans for their support.

We were amazed by all the (mostly hearing) GWS fans and how they felt inspired and enriched by our cartoons. We received email after email about how they loved learning about Deaf Culture through our comic. Kay and I felt so honored and we have always known that we were “on to a go thing”. We love our comic “That Deaf Guy” and the more we do it–the better it gets. I guess that is the way most things are in life.

‘Til next time—Matt (and Kay)

The opportunity to have my cartoons in a gallery is a dream come true. When I was 12 and my mother took be to see a Gary Larson “The Far Side” at the Smithsonian’s Natural History museum it was then that I realized that someone could make a living at cartooning. I decided that was the life for me. There are two sections to the exhibit, my “In Deaf Culture” and “Extreme Interpreting” cartoons in one gallery and “That Deaf Guy” webcomic in the other.

Please stop by the gallery and support deaf artists–especially deaf cartoonists! If you can’t make it and are looking for a great under $20.00 gift that is very unique.

Whoa, it has been a while since I blogged … so many great things have happened.

You may have noticed that MDaigle Toons/ Matt Daigle websites have been revamped. Although we are still working on the final details, we are getting very close to our final vision.

It’s also been a busy summer. I have traveled the country giving workshops about being a deaf cartoonist. I met some great people in Maryland, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. I will soon be off to hang with the deaf and hard of hearing teens in Dallas. I am really looking forward to it.

With all the traveling, I was still doing my graphic design job, so eventually something had to give. “That Deaf Guy” saw a dry spell but, as promised, will be up and running again soon.

And if my plate wasn’t full enough, I have been developing my novelty T-shirt business, Handsay with my partner Brandon Hill. All of this work has been overwhelming but very gratifying.

Then this Friday, on my 40th (gulp) birthday my family and I are attending my alma mater university for an award presentation. I am proud to say that I was nominated and won the G.O.L.D. (Graduates Of the Last Decade) award by the NSU Alumni Association at Northern State University in Aberdeen SD. It is the nicest birthday gift to receive an award and then the following day ride in the Homecoming parade with our son who will be celebrating his 6th birthday.

When I get back to California, I’ll be happy to get back to work on “That Deaf Guy” Thank you for emails, compliments, words of support and your patience concerning the strip! Right now, I am working on how to make a real living out of making webcomics, so while I do that “figuring out” part, please buy my humor books and Handsay t-shirts. Hint, hint holidays are comin’ and they are great for gifts exchanges!

Check out the new revamped websites:

If you are wondering what will happen to this blog. It will live on to entertain my often useless ramblings and the art that follows. This blog has served me well and I will not abandon it for greener pastures. Most of my current followers wouldn’t even know my work without this site. So please, continue to drop by and say hello and hopefully laugh a little.

This Deaf Reel is for my son. He doesn’t really know about the Smurfs like I do. But I hope to take him to the movie soon.

I grew up with these sweet, funny creatures. I wondered as a child if there was a deaf version. Now that I am a grown man and an artist – I can create whatever I like including “The Doofs”. “Doof” means Deaf in Dutch and so that is where I placed these creatures with their ILY hats and blue skin. Now what I need, is to have a plush toy of one of these to give to my son at bedtime. The Dreaming Doof signs his favorite bedtime story. Zzzzzz…

I love this Deaf Reel Captain ASL parody! I created for all those people who were not allowed to ASL in the classroom. It makes me chuckle to think about those kids dutifully sitting around the table in speech class and wishing someone, anyone, will rescue them. BAM! CRASH! In bust Captain ASL who scares off the teacher and sits and chats with these kids for hours and hours telling ASL stories, jokes, and anecdotes.
